The idea of religion, that we have developed a collective concioussness i would say is not a bad thing. It gives us a basis for moral and other agreements and standards which as different groups may differ in opinions is always debatable. It has formed the backbone and starting point of justice systems, laws, etc...
What is bad about religion is that it is manipulated into forcing and frightening followers and non followers into agreeing with it. So many horrible acts have been carried outin the name of religion and if we go back to the religous texts we find they are the biggest hipocrasies.
Religion itself is not bad, it is the "evil" that exists in every man that shows itself in many to use religion to control for their own selfish gain.
(Extremism, the crusades, the inquisition, the conquering of South America, Oliver Cromwell to name but a few.....oh and the Republican Party)
Im "Catholic" by the way but have never agreed with it and all but given up on it because of incompetence and its refusal to exist in the modern world

Here we go.
Ok, so "Does religion matter in today's world?" good question to which i have a relatively simple answer. Yes it does and no it does not.
Simple huh?
See some people, like myself, do not care if there is religion or not. In my view i have a pretty good life, i know where i stand and i don't need to rely on a higher being to quide my way. There are quite a lot of people in the world who feel this way.
Then we have the poor, the people who have gone to jail, the people who have had a death in the family and many other types of people who think, and believe, that they need some higher being to help them get through life.
So my point on this issue is: to some people religion is a huge part of todays world, to others it isn't. Can't really say for sure what the majority thinks but this is how i feel.
Atheist
